The path of stroke care: nurse education materials for UnityPoint Health Trinity Medical Center

    Get PDF
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. About 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke every year. National best practice measures regarding stroke care are promoted through the quality and education department at UnityPoint Health Trinity Medical Center. Trinity’s nurses are encouraged to update their skills at the annual Spring Fling informational fair. Through working with the quality and education department, informational materials regarding the care path of a stroke patient were created and delivered in order to educate nurses about these national best practice measures. This project utilized interpersonal communication models to increase knowledge of multi-departmental roles in the care of a stroke patient as well as daily care best practices. Nurse education materials, including a professional poster, were created to highlight the importance of assuring a competent public and personal health care workforce. Through Spring Fling, nurses were exposed to information in a comfortable environment where they are challenged to continue their education. In this way, these nurse education materials promoted best practices and facilitated education across departments to assure better quality stroke care through creating a more competent workforce

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nickel Complexes With Relevance To Nickel Acireductone Dioxygenase And Nickel Superoxide Dismutase

This research presents an investigation of synthetic model complexes with relevance to the active site of Ni(II) acireductone dioxygenase (Ni-ARD) and Ni(II) superoxide dismutase (Ni-SOD). Acireductone dioxygenases (ARDs) are a unique set of enzymes found in the methionine salvage pathway that catalyze the oxidation reaction of acireductone (1, 2-dihydroxy-3-oxo-5-(methylthio)pent-1-ene). These enzymes share a compolypeptide sequence but bind different metal ions, Ni2+ or Fe2+, at the active site. The Ni-ARD enzyme is responsible for the off pathway shunt in the pathway. Using the tridentate nitrogen donor ligands hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp*) and the newly developed tris(1, 2-dimethyl-4-imadozyl)carbinol, (4-TICMe, Me) several reactions involving the acireductone analog 2-hydroxy-1, 3-diphenylpropan-1, 3-dione and O2 were investigated for similarities to the Ni-ARD active site. Superoxide dismutases (SODs) play a key role in protecting cells against oxidative damage by regulating the cellular concentration of the superoxide radical (O2.-) which is an unwanted byproduct of cellular metabolism. This process is accomplished by converting the superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. Several small-molecule complexes were synthesized and characterized in an effort to model the reduced state of the Ni-SOD using the Tp* ligand. The structures for these complexes have been determined using X-Ray Crystallography

Faculty-Librarian Collaboration: Applying Metacognitive Pedagogy to the Research Process

    Get PDF
Metacognition is a current buzzword in higher education. But what does it mean for the research process? Presenters and attendees will brainstorm together to come up with good, better and best concrete strategies for collaboration between subject faculty and librarians to integrate metacognition into research instruction

Long-term effects of pregnancy and childbirth on sleep satisfaction and duration of first-time and experienced mothers and fathers

Study Objectives To examine the changes in mothers’ and fathers’ sleep satisfaction and sleep duration across pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and the postpartum period of up to six years after birth; it also sought to determine potential protective and risk factors for sleep during that time. Methods Participants in a large population-representative panel study from Germany reported sleep satisfaction and sleep duration in yearly interviews. During the observation period (2008–2015), 2,541 women and 2,118 men reported the birth of their first, second, or third child and provided longitudinal data for analysis. Fixed-effects regression models were used to analyze changes in sleep associated with childbirth. Results Sleep satisfaction and duration sharply declined with childbirth and reached a nadir during the first three months postpartum, with women more strongly affected (sleep satisfaction reduction compared with pre-pregnancy: women, 1.81 points on a 0 to 10 scale, d = 0.79 vs. men, 0.37 points, d = 0.16; sleep duration reduction compared with pre-pregnancy: women, 62 min, d = 0.90 vs. men, 13 min, d = 0.19). In both women and men, sleep satisfaction and duration did not fully recover for up to six years after the birth of their first child. Breastfeeding was associated with a slight decrease in maternal sleep satisfaction (0.72 points, d = 0.32) and duration (14 min, d = 0.21). Parental age, household income, and dual vs. single parenting were unrelated, or only very weakly related, to improved sleep. Conclusion Following the sharp decline in sleep satisfaction and duration in the first months postpartum, neither mothers’ nor fathers’ sleep fully recovers to pre-pregnancy levels up to six years after the birth of their first child

Stuck in the Adoption Funnel: The Effect of Interruptions in the Adoption Process on Usage

Many firms have introduced Internet-based customer self-service applications such as online payments or brokerage services. Despite high initial sign-up rates, not all customers actually shift their dealings online. We investigate whether the multistage nature of the adoption process (an “adoption funnel”) for such technologies can explain this low take-up. We use exogenous variation in events that possibly interrupt adoption, in the form of vacations and public holidays in different German states, to identify the effect on regular usage of being interrupted earlier in the adoption process. We find that interruptions in the early stages of the adoption process reduce a customer's probability of using the technology regularly. Our results suggest significant cost-saving opportunities from eliminating interruptions in the adoption funnel.NET InstituteLondon Business School.
